The Ultimate DIY

Paint your own painting, make your own sign, plant your own garden and the list goes on. DIY is here and it’s here to stay. According to Nielsen Bookscan some 12 million Colouring books for Adults were sold in 2015.

Taking this DIY effect a bit further, sites like ETSY and Amazon Handmade have zoned in on the market for skilled crafters. With the amount of DIY tools available on these sites, it’s hard not to get into the spirit of connecting with your inner creative self.

Selfie was named Oxford Dictionaries Word of the year in 2013. Defined as a noun meaning a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website. Whether you love taking them, love seeing other people’s or loathe them, selfies are all over the place. We are returning to ourselves in ways we never thought possible and having fun doing it (shoutout to awesome filters).

I have attended my share of DIY workshops and one thing stood out to me. Every time I went with someone who hasn’t done a workshop before, they were nervous. Understandably so, it’s unfamiliar, insecurities surface, and for the most part we have unlearned to be creative. Even those of you who work in the creative industries are still bound by the rules of what the clients want.

Journaling is yet another form of DIY introspection. When we take up our pens to write, we become aware of ourselves in yet another different way. Similarly, deciding to journaling through life’s toughest circumstances can be unnerving. It might be a new form of creativity for the writer, an unexplored avenue. How will you know if you are any good at it? Are you afraid of what you might discover?

The truth? It’s yours. It doesn’t have to be understood by anyone else. This becomes abundantly clear when strangers fill up the room and fall into the silent trance of creativity. From the first brush stroke, the first dab on a piece of signage we channel our creativity. We form a collective of inspired creators. The end result? A masterpiece you can pride on. The best part? It actually doesn’t look like anyone else’s - it is yours.

So take up your paintbrushes, pens, markers and gardening tools. Rediscover your inner creative soul on the path of enlightenment and don’t forget to post a Selfie when done.

Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures. Henry Ward Beecher
